Use a sharps container

Container basics

Drop the entire syringe in point-first; don't recap, bend, or break needles first. Keep the container upright and out of reach of children, and stop filling it when it's about three-quarters full.

When the container is full

Disposal rules vary by state and city. Common options include:

• Household hazardous waste collection sites or drop-off days
• Pharmacy or hospital take-back programs
• Mail-back sharps disposal services
